Holomua Elementary will be
starting a new pilot pedestrian safety program using pedestrian flags beginning
on Monday, April 24. These flags will be
located near the crosswalk by the entrance of our school, and will help make
students and families more visible as they cross the street. The flags will be
made available immediately before and after school.
I want to encourage you to
talk to your child about safe traffic and pedestrian habits, and how they can
safely and respectfully use the pedestrian flags before and after school. Below
are the bullet points that were shared with your child during student led
presentations in their classrooms and during lunch about pedestrian flags.
Why are we doing this?
· To prevent pedestrian accidents while crossing in
crosswalks.
· Drivers can see a flag much easier than they can see a
person.
· To help students get to and from school safely, and to
help keep the community safe.
How do I use the flag?
· Grab a flag from the container by the crosswalk. Only
one flag is needed for a group of people.
· Raise your flag high, wave it back and forth, and keep
eye contact with the drivers as you cross the street.
· Upon reaching the other side of the street, place your
flag in the container on that side.
How do I respect the flag program?
· Do not destroy or damage the flag.
· Do not use the flag as a weapon.
· AND REMEMBER...no matter how cool the flags
are...Please put them back in their proper place.
Thank you for your cooperation
and support.
